On October 17, 1838, Fred Mitchell writes from New Orleans to his brother Robert about his seagoing adventures off the Gulf coast of Texas and Mexico. A second letter from Port Lavacca on June 27 (no year) gives details of available land in Gonzales County, Texas, on the Guadalupe River; the benefits and drawbacks of the land in Colorado and St. Joseph [San Jose] Island, Texas; and the best travel route. There is a photocopied original and typed transcript for the June letter and only a typed transcript for the October letter.
